This EPC and MEDAM online event is the third and final one in this event series exploring future EU-Africa cooperation.
Against the background of the New Pact, COVID-19 and the upcoming EU-AU Summit, this is a singular moment to reflect on the role of migration in this future partnership.
After a three-month suspension due to COVID-19, resuming resettlement efforts in earnest and providing certainty and safety for the thousands who were left stranded has proven to be no easy task. What can European actors do to fulfil their commitments to global responsibility-sharing and assist those in need? The New Pact stresses the importance of resettlement for providing protection, but how can member states be motivated to resume or scale up existing resettlement schemes? Can they meet the challenge given the scale of global protection needs? Will European resettlement policies remain first and foremost a humanitarian instrument, as links are increasingly being made to third country cooperation in other policy areas such as readmission? Finally, how can the New Pact’s ambition of a European approach to community sponsorship be fulfilled?
