Return and Readmission after the New Pact

This EPC and MEDAM online event is the second of a three-part series exploring future EU-Africa cooperation.

Against the background of the New Pact, COVID-19 and the upcoming EU-AU Summit, this autumn provides a singular moment to reflect on the role of migration in this future partnership.

The discussion will focus on return and readmission. The Commission’s proposed New Pact on Migration and Asylum puts returns front and centre. It envisions inter alia accelerated return procedures, a new notion of “return sponsorship”, and renewed readmission cooperation with non-EU countries. At the same time, returns have faced important challenges in recent years, including around their effectiveness, human rights compliance, and their impact on relations with third countries. How can these obstacles be tackled effectively and how can EU-Africa cooperation in this area lead to a mutually beneficial partnership?
